Nerja council have published an artist’s impression of their proposed redevelopment of Calahonda beach, next to the Balcon de Europa. Back in March the very popular beach restaurant, Papagayos, announced that they were unable to re-open this year as the council were in the process of purchasing the building from the owner, with the intention of demolishing it.

Despite a campaign and a petition to keep Papagayos open, the restaurant remains closed and the council are pressing on with their redevelopment plans. As can be seen in the artist’s impression, the plan is to extend the beach to the area where Papagayos currently stands, relocating the sun loungers higher up the beach, with a municipal owned chiringuito (restaurant) above.

The council also want to re-open the old Paseo de los Carabineros cliff path, which used to run from Calahonda to Burriana beach. The council’s €150,000 plan would create a new 200 metre path, starting where Papagayos currently sits. The old cliff path was closed due to dangerous rock falls and the council have been planning its replacement for several years.
