A total of 124 small and medium companies that have outstanding invoices owed by Nerja council may soon get paid, thanks to a Royal Decree passed by the Spanish Government. The new law is designed to expedite payments to local government suppliers and in Nerja’s case the amount owed to these companies is more than 1.2 million Euros (as at the end of last year).

There is currently a total of just over 320 companies that have outstanding invoices with the council and the total amount outstanding is 4.8 million Euros.

Once the outstanding invoices have been approved by the Spanish government, the companies will be able to collect their money from May or June. Six months may sound like a long payment period, but it is common for suppliers to have to wait months or even years to get paid.
