As part of the tender process for the new water treatment plant, several companies having been carrying out work in and around Nerja, including Calle Diputacion in the centre of town and out on the N340 motorway.
In some cases samples have been taken at depths of up to 20 meters, with the surveyors being careful not to disrupt existing cables and pipework. In many streets the new sewage and water pipes are already in place (such as in El Barrio where the work is almost complete). In others (such as calle Maravillas de Maro) the streets will have to be dug up to install the new pipework.
The tender documents were published in the Spanish Official Gazette and the Official Journal of the European Union last month, with the tendering process due to be complete by the end of this year. Opposition groups are continuing to keep the pressure up on the governing parties and will not be satisfied until the new plant is up and running, which is scheduled to be in 2015.
