The local police in Torrox have made a complaint to the Spanish Data Protection Commissioner after they discovered that their employer (Torrox Town Hall) had installed secret GPS tracking devices in their police vehicles.

The union representative of the Torrox police, believes that the devices were placed on the vehicles to allow the council “to take disciplinary action against them for alleged breach of their duties”.

The union is also preparing legal action and the council could face fines of up to €300,000 if the data protection complaint is upheld.

In Nerja last month the town hall had to turn off the CCTV cameras outside the local police headquarters due to data protection issues.
