A young man tragically lost his life in Nerja today, just after 1pm and another was slightly injured after jumping from a rock in the Carabeo area near to the Balcon de Europa. Both were among a group of Portuguese students who were swimming and jumping into the sea in a shallow area, according to the 112 emergency services.

The friends of the victim recovered his body from the water and called the local police at 1.15pm. The emergency services were very quickly on the scene, but were unable to resuscitate the dead man. The other victim was wounded in the knee and did not require hospitalisation.

Tombstoning is a worldwide activity which has occurred around coastlines for generations, unfortunately over recent years it has gained attention for the wrong reasons, with a number of people killed or seriously injured. The title was adopted because of the way a person falls and plunges into deep water, in a similar way a stone would. Every year around the world there are many reports of people being killed or injured by jumping into the sea in this way.
