The XXIX Milla de Navidad “Memorial Miguel Prados Ruiz” (Nerja Christmas Mile) athletics meeting will be held on Saturday (21st December), starting at 4.00pm with the start/finish line on the Balcon de Europa. This sporting event, has become a Christmas classic in Nerja with hundreds of people taking part and large numbers of spectators watching.
The winners of each of the 24 categories, from the 5 year olds right through to the over 65’s, will be awarded with a ham for their efforts. Plus the top three in each category will get a trophy. There will also be a special prize of €100 for anyone who breaks the all time record.
As this is the 30th anniversary of the Nerja Athletics Club, there will also be a “Milla Celeste” of just under a mile at 4.45pm, where past and present members of the club, along with their families and friends can take part in a fun run.
Entrance fees are €1 for the youngest competitors, and €2 for the 16 year olds and up.
The athletics meeting was announced by the new councillor for sports Antonio García who took over on Tuesday from his predecessor, José Alberto Tomé. Councillor Tomé resigned after last weekend’s bike marathon was cancelled at the last minute. The bike race was due to be held on Sunday, starting at El Playazo beach, but due to the works being carried out on the beach road, the police advised that it was not safe to hold the race in that area, leading to its cancellation amid a storm of complaints from would be competitors and the resignation of the councillor responsible.
