A team of researchers from the UNED (open university) and the Universities of Salamanca and Valencia, have discovered a 30,000 year old piece of jewelry – a pendant made from a shell – which would have belonged to one of the people who lived in the caves.
According to Dr Jesús Francisco Jordá, from the Department of Prehistory and Archaeology at UNED this find demonstrates that the ancient cave dwellers had “similar tastes to ours, who valued body adornment, perhaps with a meaning related to the identity of the group to which they belonged, as happens now with motifs that people and groups of people carry in our society “.
Some of the artefacts found when the Nerja Caves were discovered can be seen at the Nerja Caves museum.
