A group of volunteers went out on Burriana and Torrecilla beaches yesterday, to try to encourage smokers not to leave their cigarette butts in the sand. Two of Nerja’s councillors Sandra Jimena and Nieves Atencia also took part and helped hand out cones to be used as beach ashtrays.

The volunteers also gave out information sheets explaining the damage that is done by littering the sand with cigarette ends and gave more of the cones to businesses at the two beaches. According to the volunteers most of the beach users said that they were not smokers.

This is one of the events that was organised by the council as part of World Environment Day. In other events around the town children from the local schools took part in various activities including painting pictures with an environmental theme.

Prizes were also handed out for a painting competition organised by the local water company Aguas de Narixa, in which more than 200 schoolchildren took part.
