December the 28th At The Balcon de Europa Nerja

December the 28th At The Balcon de Europa Nerja

Now that the summer is over many people start thinking about an autumn or winter break in Nerja, to escape from the harsher Northern European climate. Prices are cheaper, the crowds have gone but the weather is still summer-like – the forecast for the first week of October is daytime temperatures of up to 25°C, so there will be plenty of visitors on the beaches and the bars and restaurants will all still be open.

October is also Feria month (8th to 12th of October), with music, dancing and the fairground open until the very small hours. The Feria takes place in the car park between Los Huertos and Calle Carabeo (near to the Balcon de Europa) – to find it, just follow the vast amount of noise coming from the Feria ground, with every ride competing for attention.

October’s warm weather continues into November (average daytime temperature in November is 20°C), although you can also expect unsettled weather at times, maybe even some much needed rain. The rain storms here are usually short and intense – it can be pouring with rain in the morning, with soggy tourists huddled in cafes or under the arches on the Balcon de Europa, but by the afternoon the sun is back out, drying everyone out again. Evenings can be chilly, so pack some warm clothes as well and an umbrella may well come in useful.

Nerja Feria Big Wheel
December temperatures average 18°C during the day and again there will be periods of settled warm weather, with people sunbathing on the beaches. This time of year is ideal to go walking in the mountains or along the sea front, or just to go and sit in a pavement cafe in the sun, watching the world go by.

Winter starts on December the 21st and lasts until March the 20th. This changeover to winter actually marks the shortest day and the days start to get longer as we move past Christmas into the New Year, with night falling after 6pm. The lighter evenings compared to Northern Europe, is one of the main draws that Nerja has for visitors tired of short days and bad weather, many of whom will book to stay for a month or even the whole of winter.

Ayo’s on Burriana Beach is open year round

Out of the sun, during winter, in the shade and especially if it is windy, it can feel cold. Holidaymakers can be seen during the day in shorts and t-shirts, but as soon as the sun goes in they head back to their hotels and apartments to change into jeans and jumpers – so don’t go out just before sunset dressed for the beach.

As it is winter you can’t expect clear sunny skies all the time and indeed there will be a few days of rain in December. There will also be days with strong off shore winds, which can be cold, so make sure you also bring a fleece. Windy days are ideal for exploring further inland away from the wind, and visiting Frigiliana or Torrox pueblo, or even going further afield to Malaga, Granada and Cordoba, which are all sensible day trips.

During the winter months, many of the bars and restaurants take a break after the long hot summer, some closing for a month, others closing until spring, but there are many other places that stay open year round and there is always somewhere to go and have a meal outside, either on Burriana beach, the Balcon de Europa or down at Torrecilla. Although the crowds have gone, the town is still lively, with winter visitors and of course the people that live and work here.

December is also the month with street parades for Father Christmas and a party on the Balcon de Europa on New Years Eve, so bring warm clothes to wear during the chilly winter’s evenings as well as beach stuff if you are lucky enough to get a patch of settled weather and don’t forget to pack a waterproof jacket, just in case.
