Nerja council have announced that the work to complete the pedestrianisation of El Barrio will not start until after Christmas, to avoid the works disrupting the holiday season. The councillor responsible for infrastructure, Antonio García, held a meeting with the residents of Calle El Barrio last week and this was the main conclusion of the meeting . The works should be finished before the start of the Easter holidays, to avoid disruption to that holiday period.
El Barrio is the street that runs west from Plaza Cavana (next to the Balcon de Europa) towards Torrecilla beach.
Once El Barrio has been finished, the next street due to be pedestrianised is Calle Diputacion, which is the street parallel to El Barrio.
The work to pedestrianise and replace the drains and other services was started at the end of 2011, with the first stage completed before this summer. This second phase is due to be complete before summer 2013 at a budget of 275,000 euros.
