Athletes from all over Europe are currently training in Nerja, taking advantage of the mild spring climate and using the council owned sports facilities, such as the Enrique López Cuenca Stadium pictured. Sports Councillor José Alberto Tomé has announced that after setting up the “Tourism and Sport” programme three seasons ago, increasing numbers are visiting to take advantage of the training facilities in Nerja, with up to 150 people per session.

At the moment there are athletes from various European countries inlcuding Britain, Austria, Sweden, Germany and Poland amongst others, who have been here training since before Semana Santa.

The council have also made special arrangements to keep the training facilities open during holidays and other times when they would normally be closed, to accommodate the visiting athletes.

Councillor José Alberto Tomé also stated that the number of athletes taking part has increased by 50% so far compared to the same period last year. In 2012 a total of 567 visiting athletes came to Nerja in the February to July training season a number that looks likely to be beaten this year.
