A fire in the early hours of Christmas Eve destroyed five parked cars and damaged a sixth before being brought under control by the fire brigade. The events took place in a parking area beside the Rio Chillar near to the old bridge on the west side of Nerja. Local residents from the neighbouring block of flats raised the alarm at half past midnight and the fire brigade arrived in time to stop the fire from spreading to more of the parked vehicles.
At least one of the vehicles was not insured for fire as the owner had changed his comprehensive policy to third party, just two weeks previously.
The Guardia Civil are investigating the cause of the fire, which appears to have started in one of the cars, before spreading to the rest. In September 2010 another fire in the same location burnt out a car and a van.
