The Nerja Carnival is over for another year but if you can’t wait that long this coming weekend the Maro Carnival 2012 takes place. Maro is only a few kilometres outside Nerja and easily reached by bus, car or on foot, so you can carry on the celebrations in this lovely whitewashed village.

The Carnaval de Maro is on Saturday 25 February.

The events will start at five in the afternoon with a colourful parade through the town starting from Calle San Miguel and ending in the Maro Community Center. The ‘Fiesta de Carnaval’ begins here and the highlight will be the Malaga group ‘Pitos de Oro’ (Whistles of Gold) who perform a traditional carnival show of music and dance. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes.

At 10.30pm the carnival moves outside for the burial and burning of the tapaculo (a type of flounder). The party will then continue inside the Community Centre.
