The Nerja Caves Foundation have approved next year’s budget for the Caves, with a reduction of €220,000 compared to 2012. The budget includes repayments of the loans taken out for the Nerja Museum and a doubling of the amount spent on research and conservation.
The 2013 budget forecasts a reduction in revenue from ticket sales for the caves, the museum and the Caves Festival. The number of days allocated for the Festival have been reduced on advice from the scientific committee for conservation reasons.
At the same time the caves management are hoping to attract more visitors from cruise ships docking in Malaga port and will be doing more to market the Caves to cruise lines in 2013. The Caves have joined the Mesa de Cruceros de la Costa del Sol and will be organising visits to the caves for professionals from the cruise industry to promote the caves profile in that growing sector of the tourism market.
