Two months ago today Nerja, and this part of Andalucia, was hit by a huge rain storm causing flooding and damage in the town and throughout the region. A total of 2 inches (54mm) of fain fell overnight, and was at its heaviest at 7am.
At Burriana the rivers down to the beach flooded washing away part of the promenade at the western end of the beach and damaging the footbridge. The beach itself was washed away in places and there were piles of bamboo driftwood and rubbish at the waterline and out to sea.
In other parts of Nerja, drain covers were blown off with the strength of the storm water and there were reports of some flooding in basements and cortijos near to the Rio Chillar.
In total Nerja Council estimated the damage at nearly €850,000 spread across 33 different locations in the municipality. Two months on and most of the obvious damage has been repaired, with the footbridge (pictured) at the western end of Burriana now completely repaired (the only evidence of the damage being a line of slightly different colour paving stones).
The river at the eastern end of Burriana (by Rincon del Sol) is still flowing and is likely to continue to do so until the summer months. The part of the beach that was washed away at the eastern end of Torrecilla beach (by the road down to the beach) has been replaced and is almost back to normal.
