plaza españa nerjaPlaza España Nerja is one of the newest squares in the town and is located behind the ayuntamiento/tourist information offices next to the church at the Balcon de Europa. To get to the square, walk up past the tourist information office.

The square is surrounded by newly built apartment buildings, with shop/bar premises on the ground floors. At the time of writing (March 2012) the buildings are not all complete and the business premises are largely unoccupied, but when the development is finished and the shops and bars are open, Plaza España will be a welcome addition to Nerja.

There are two hotels which open on to the square, Hotel Mena Plaza and Hotel Puerta De Mar. Both are well located for the bars and restaurants in the old town centre and the nearby beaches of El Salon and Calahonda, which are just a few minutes walk away.

The Nerja History Museum is also located on the square and is tucked away in the corner on the opposite side from the Balcon de Europa.

Various events are held in the square throughout the year, including Residents Day, various seasonal markets and of course the carnival marquee (the “carpa”) is there during carnival week.

The underground pay car park accessed from Calle Cruz, is underneath Plaza España and there are steps up to the square.
