Since 2006 the Three Cultures Festival has been the highlight of Frigiliana’s year and takes place at the end of August. The old part of this pretty whitewashed village is acknowledged to be one of the best preserved Moorish towns in Spain. Before Frigiliana became the bloody scene in 1569 of one of the last stands of the Moors in the region the area was a relatively harmonious mix of Moors, Jews and Christians . The ‘Festival Frigiliana Tres Culturas’ brings together the influences of these three cultures with a festival of food, music, art and street entertainment.
The most popular event at the festival is the tapas route. In fact there are two routes, one with a Moorish theme and the other with a Mudejar influence. Any visitor who completes a tapas route will be awarded a T-Shirt recognising their achievement. The streets are thronged with people moving from bar to bar, music is everywhere and the area around the 16th century palace has street theatre which could have come straight from a medieval scene in a movie. There is also a huge craft fair with artisans creating traditional items such as leather goods, candles and jewellery, and others using wood, glass or clay to create wonderful products.
Each night there are outdoor live concerts near the cultural centre where famous national and international artists perform, but music is everwhere even if you decide not to attend one of these shows.
The Three Cultures Festival is like having Carnival in summer with a cultural theme that makes it unique and as always with a Spanish fiesta it is great fun.
