February in Nerja is Carnival month and the weather is starting to warm up after the lows of winter, with an average daytime temperature of 18°C. The air will be cold, but the sun will be hot, so on calm sunny days there will be people out sunbathing on the more sheltered spots at the end of Burriana beach and Torrecilla beach (pictured above and below). Make sure you pack a raincoat and warm clothing as well as your beach stuff, because there may well be rain during your stay.

February is still winter though, so there will be cloudy days, rainy days and cold days as well, but it is still a very popular month for taking advantage of all the other outdoor activities available in the area, including hiking in the mountains behind Nerja, mountain biking or just taking a long walk from one end of Burriana to the other end of el Playazo beach. You can also go on organised walking trips to places like Frigiliana, or if you have a hire car, drive up to Acebuchal and go for a walk in the spectacular mountains there or just have lunch in the only restaurant in the village (below).

There should also be plenty of snow in the Sierra Nevadas, so a day trip to the ski resort there is highly recommended. You can just take a trip on the cable car and have lunch, even if you don’t want to rent skis or a snowboard.

Nerja Carnival is the big fiesta in February and is one of the most entertaining festivals of the year, with four days of partying and extravagance, in preparation for the self-denial of the Lent period, culminating in the Entierro del Chanque (the burial of the sardine) where a large model sardine is blown up on Calahonda beach. This year (2013) the council also organised a pet fancy dress competition for the first time, a popular event which is sure to be repeated next year.
