The Nerja Councillor for Traffic, Inocencia Quintero, has announced that Nerja council is working with other municipalities in the Costa del Sol to stop unlicensed taxis from operating in the region.
At a meeting held in Torremolinos between the region’s local councils and the Junta de Andalucia, representatives agreed to develop a new joint protocol to deal with unlicensed taxis, by harmonising the by-laws in the different municipalities. Inocencia Quintero claims that unlicensed cabs “greatly harms the industry and provides a poor image of the town,” .
Many people use unlicensed taxis because they are cheaper than the official taxis, who have to pay large fees to obtain their licenses. Not surprisingly the licensed taxi drivers resent the intrusion into their business with their prices being undercut in this way.
