Sandra Jimena, the councillor for Popular Traditions at Nerja council has announced that entries are now invited for this year’s Día de la Cruz, which will take place on the 3rd of May 2013.
Día de la Cruz is a very popular event and consists of a series of street parties, where locals get together to set up floral displays in the shape of a cross in their streets, and enjoy the day with food, drink, music and dancing. There are prizes for the best design, and some localities of the town never fail to win. The old part of Nerja is particularly colourful and Calle Parras perhaps the stand out location to visit.
Visitors are welcome to tour the different crosses and the town hall will produce a map with the locations of all the entries. At the different crosses visitors may be offered a drink and a sample of the local specialities that are prepared for the day, in return for a small donation. Día de la Cruz is also a good excuse to take a tour of the myriad local tapas bars in the back streets of the old town.
Individuals and groups who want to register their display in the event have until the 26th of April at the Tradiciones Populares offices at 12 Calle Cristo in Nerja, between 10am and 2pm.
