During the winter Nerja experienced some heavy storms and this led to much of El Chucho beach being washed away, leaving only a small strip of sand as can be seen in the photograph to the right.
This week the department responsible for the beaches of Nerja announced that work to restore El Chucho is almost complete. Over 400 lorry loads of sand and coarse gravel have been used, 200 sourced from the Rio Chillar to be used as a base, and 200 of fine sand from the Rio Seco.
The minister responsible, Bernardo Pozuelo, declared that in a few days the beach ‘will be in perfect condition’, and highlighted that the new sand does not contain any kind of organic remains. He promised that the council would be publishing further plans for the development of Nerja beaches, inluding a promenade linking El Chucho to Torrecilla beach.
