In an effort to increase waste recycling in Nerja, which currently is below the national average, the council has taken delivery of 111 new yellow recycling bins to be located around the town. Currently only 7.5 kilos of recyclable material is collected per person in Nerja and Juan Jesús Bernal from the provincial environment department hopes that these new bins will help improve on that figure.
In the first eight months of 2012, the refuse service collected 113 tonnes of packaging in Nerja, 268 tonnes of glass and 157 tonnes of cardboard and paper. These figures represented a significant increase over previous years being around 12% more than in 2011 and 52% more than in 2010.
In addition last year the company Reciclados La Estrella collected 68,832 kilos of used cooking oil from restaurants and also from the various domestic recycling points around the town.
