Semana Santa, or Holy Week, is marked by a series of processions around the town by the different religious brotherhoods, where funereal music, slow drum beats and incense set the mood, whilst dozens of volunteers carry huge platforms bearing images of the Easter story.
The first procession is on Palm Sunday at midday, starting at Plaza Ermita and ending at the church on the Balcon de Europa. The largest procession is on Easter Sunday, starting (at midday) and finishing on the Balcon de Europa.
There are other processions throughout the week, beginning and ending at the El Salvador church next to the Balcon de Europa, where the spectacle of the huge icons being squeezed out of the door is worth seeing.Â
People lining the streets give an indication that you are in the right place, and the slow drum beats in the distance warn of the march’s advance.
A good spot to watch all the processions is near to the chemists (Farmacia) on Calle Pintada, or you can join the crowds on the Balcon de Europa.
Nerja Easter Processions
Below is a list of processions from 2017 – this will be updated with the 2018 information when it is released by Nerja council, however it is always the same every year – only the dates change.
There are also masses and other smaller events held throughout the week. You can pick up a leaflet around Easter time in the Tourist Information Office with full details if you wish to attend.

Yes, but they are still publicising Calle Huertos etc rather than the revised route. Just like bus timetables really. None of them agree, and then at the bus stop you find it is another time that isn't on any of them. Lol, or weep!

Thanks for that GingerHound. I had hoped that would be the case as I can have a good vantage point on the revised route to use my camcorder.

At least the organisers realised the road was closed before trying to lead a procession down it. 🙂

Re the Easter Sunday procession route. Part of the route is advertised as along Calle Huertos, but this is currently dug up, and I cannot find anything that gives an alternative route. Does anyone know, as there must have been at least a partial change?

It looks like the procession will go along Calle Carabeo from the Balcon, rather than up Pintada and across, missing out Los Huertos. It will then go up calle Frigiliana and continue as planned.
