Biblioplaya nerjaNerja’s beach libraries the “Biblioplayas”, the small blue and white kiosks on Burriana beach and Torrecilla, have been lending books and games to beach goers for eleven years. To borrow something from the Biblioplaya, you need to have a library card, or an identity document such as your passport – although one enterprising visitor left his trainers as security.

The beach libraries were pioneered on the Costa del Sol here in Nerja by the Culture and Beaches departments at Nerja Council, along with the Nerja Cultural Action Association. In recent years the Nerja Caves Foundation has also contributed to the project.

The biblioplayas have a wide range of different books, including children’s books, with topics ranging from science fiction to romance, to, classic novels, poetry, nature, comics, newspapers and magazines – in Spanish, English and other languages. The libraries also lend beach toys and games to keep the smallest members of the family entertained. Many foreign tourists donate their own books to the libraries for others to read and welcome this unique beach service.

The biblioplayas are open in July and August from 11am on the promenade at Torrecilla beach and Burriana beach.
