Large crowds gathered on the Balcon de Europa this afternoon to see the singing and dancing at the start of the “Romería” – the procession of horses, oxen and carts that make their way to the Nerja Caves.

The procession runs from Calle Diputacion, through the Balcon de Europa and then up Calle Pintada and on to the main road to Maro (photos below).

Around 100 carts and 150 riders took part in the procession, with more people on foot. The prize of €200 for best ox drawn cart, went to “Blanco y colorao” and the prize for best mechanically propelled cart, also of €200, went to “Los amigos”. There were also prizes for best horse drawn carriage and best horseman, as well as 2nd and 3rd place awards in all the categories. The prizes will be given out on Saturday at midday in the town hall.
