Taxes in Nerja next year will be frozen, according to the councillor for finance. Rates charged by the council will however increase by the rate of inflation of 1.9%. There will also be a new charge for rubbish collection, which previously was included in the IBI council tax. This new rubbish collection tax will be €3 per month and the council claim that the rate is much lower than in neighbouring towns such as Frigiliana and Torrox where the charge is €7 and €9 per month respectively.

The new rubbish collection tax will raise an estimated €540,000 a year from the 15,000 properties it applies to and is being introduced as part of the central government’s plan to balance Spain’s public finances.

The political leadership of the council have also announced that Nerja will leave the Andalucian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FAMP) complaining that the Federation has been “hijacked by the opposition” and has an “undemocractic attitude”.
