Three people out walking in the natural park had to be rescued by a team from the Nerja Civil Protection last night (Sunday). The hikers had been out walking along the Rio Chillar but became lost in an area known as El Canal (the channel), which has many cliffs and other hazards.

The emergency services were alerted when the walkers called 112 on their mobile phone and the local Civil Protection sent a team to their aid. The rescuers found the party at around 11pm, unharmed, although one of the women had a small injury from a fall, which was treated at the site. The hikers did not have torches with them and were relying on illumination from their mobile phones.

The Civil Protection team brought the walkers back down the Rio Chillar and returned them to their car, which was parked in the quarry area of the river. No further medical attention was required.

Two of the hikers, a 31 year old woman and a 27 year old man, are from Malaga while the third, 31, is from Alhaurin de la Torre.

Nerja Councillor Innocence Quintero congratulated the members of Civil Protection for the rescue.

Last July, a 48 year old Dutch tourist went missing in the Rio Chillar area for more than two weeks, and despite extensive searches of the area she was only found by chance by a group of walkers.
