The residents from Nerja’s Tutti Frutti plaza have complained to the council about the bars in the square with music and terraces. According to a 2002 law approved by the regional government, bars with music can not have terraces outside and as such the bars in Tutti Frutti will either have to close their terraces or stop the music.
Nerja council have stated that despite the town being a designated Tourism Municipality and the strong demand from visitors for the type of bars seen in Tutti Frutti, the council has no option other than to comply with the law and require that the bars close their terraces. Another option being considered is that the bars might apply to change their licenses from bar with music to cafeteria, which would enable them to keep their terraces open.
Strict application of this licensing requirement over the years has seen many bars in Nerja closed by the local police after complaints from neighbours.
