A fishing boat from Vélez Málaga, near to Nerja, brought home an enormous monkfish yesterday, caught in the Alborán Sea. The monkfish weighed 60 kilos and was 1.6 metres in length and 1.15 metres wide.

The giant fish has been sold to a catering school in Valle-Niza, further down the coast from Velez-Malaga, to be studied and ultimately cooked by the students.

Monkfish caught in this part of Spain are typically around 4 or 5 kilos in weight, however the largest monkfish on record weighed 115kg and was caught on January 7, 2012 in Norway.

If you would like to order monkfish in one of the restaurants or chiringuitos in Nerja, the Spanish name is “rape”.
