Local children will take part in a symbolic tree planting ceremony in front of the church on the Balcon de Europa on Tuesday the 5th of June at 8pm as part of World Environment Day. The araucaria tree was planted 125 years ago to mark the visit of a religious VIP who, after a service in the El Salvador church, blessed the tree in front of a large audience.

As part of the day’s events, students will visit the Valsequillo recycling plant in Antequera, where a tree planting will take place. Other students will participate in various activities on the town’s beaches, including rubbish collection at Burriana and Torrecilla. The children will get t-shirts, gifts and prizes, including visits to the upper galleries of the Nerja Caves. A palm tree will also be planted.

Both the library and the toy library will have themes related to the environment, and the children who take part will receive a plant as a gift.

The Spanish consumers organisation FACUA have arranged a conference for students called “Water Consumption and Supply: an intelligent management of our resources.”

World Environment Day is organised by the UN and was first held in 1972. According to the UN it has grown to become the one of the main vehicles through which they stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and encourages political attention and action.
