The ruling Partido Popular came out ahead in this weekend’s local election, but have lost the absolute majority they won in 2011, by only getting 10 rather than 12 seats on the council. The mayor’s party got 42.62% of the vote compared to the opposition PSOE’s 26.13%, who will have six councillors.

Izquierda Unida will have two seats (9.27% of the vote) along with Ciudadanos who also got just over 9% and EVA got one councillor with 8.35%.

A total of 8,642 people voted on Sunday, representing 54% turnout of the registered voters. Behind the scenes negotiation will now take place between the different parties to form a coalition administration and agree if Jose Alberto Armijo will continue as mayor.
