A draft plan to re-open a section of the long closed Paseo de los Carabineros cliff path that links Calahonda beach to Burriana has been approved by Nerja council. The blueprint for the €150,000 project now has to be approved by the Costas department after which work could start to re-open a 200 metres long stretch of the total path.

The footpath has been officially closed for many years because of dangerous rock falls. The new path would partially follow the route of the existing footpath, but would run further south, taking it away from the overhanging cliffs. The route would also have two view points and would be a round-trip, rather than connecting to Carabeo beach.

The Costas (coasts) department has responsibility for this footpath and have installed barriers and signs warning of the dangers. Although officially closed, many people just climb over the barriers, or join the path from points that are not blocked off and walk along the footpath, which is almost deserted even in the height of summer.
