If you want to buy a property or a car in Nerja or open a bank account, you will need an NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjeros – Foreigners Identification Number) issued by the National Police. The nearest National Police station to Nerja is the one in Torre del Mar on Avda. Andalucia 3 (see map below). The NIE is issued as a standard A4 sheet of paper and includes the applicants full name, place of birth, nationality and is officially stamped and signed by the police. The number is a national number and can be used anywhere in Spain.

To apply for a NIE number first visit the Foreigners Department at the Nerja Ayuntamiento building (pictured above, which is on the road that links the Balcon de Europa to Plaza España) – they will give you the forms you need and answer any questions that you have. You will then need to go to the National Police station in Torre del Mar with the following:-

  • Application form EX15 filled in. (Original and 1 photocopy).
  • Passport. (Original and 1 photocopy).
  • Bank payment form. 16 €.

Every person (including children) applying for an NIE must go in person with the forms to Torre del Mar National Police Station (Comisaria). Avda. Andalucia 3. Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 14:00. Tel. 952 96 5085
