Average daytime temperatures in December are around 18ºC, although it can feel much warmer in the sun and as ever, there will be people sunbathing year round on the more sheltered spots on the beaches. Out of the sun, in the shade and especially if it is windy, it can feel cold. Holidaymakers can be seen during the day in shorts and t-shirts, but as soon as the sun goes in they head back to their hotels and apartments to change into jeans and jumpers – so don’t go out just before sunset dressed for the beach.
This year (2012) December was marked by a period of settled warm weather, with a short heatwave with daytime temperatures around 20ºC or higher for a week or so. The highest temperature recorded was 22.1ºC on the 16th of December and night time temperatures dropping as low as 10ºC.
As it is winter you can’t expect clear sunny skies all the time and indeed there were a few days of rain in December 2012. There will also be days with strong off shore winds, which can be cold, so make sure you also bring a fleece. Windy days are ideal for exploring further inland away from the wind, and visiting Frigiliana or Torrox pueblo, or even going further afield to Malaga, Granada and Cordoba, which are all sensible day trips.
December is also the month with street parades for Father Christmas and a party on the Balcon de Europa on New Years Eve, so bring warm clothes to wear during the chilly winter’s evenings as well as beach stuff if you are lucky enough to get a patch of settled weather and don’t forget to pack a waterproof jacket, just in case.
