The mayor of Nerja has signed the contract for the long awaited new development of a multi-storey car park at Burriana beach, following the lengthy planning and tender process. The €2.5 million project was awarded to a consortium of two companies back in November 2012 and the signing of the contract marks the formal end of the tendering process. Before work can start, the consortium have a few more procedures to complete, such as providing their safety plan, but the council have made clear that the work should not interfere with the summer season at Burriana.

In total the council received 28 bids from potential contractors for the new 200 place car park. The work is expected to take 18 months, and is being financed by the state fund for the modernisation of tourism infrastructures (FOMIT). The site for the new structure is currently an empty parcel of land (top left of picture), which is used for parking in the summer months, just off one of the access roads to Burriana and a few minutes walk to the beach. Parking in Burriana is very limited in the summer months, with more visitors than parking places and this new car park will be a very welcome addition to the area.

The new car park will be the fourth public car park to be built in Nerja, the others being the underground car parks at the Balcon de Europa, with 733 spaces, Verano Azul park with 273 spaces and the public pool car park, with 70 spaces. There is also the privately owned car park at Los Huertos.
