The fire brigade were called out to two fires in the Nerja area yesterday. The first incident took place at around 4pm in el pago de La Laguna near to Maro. The fire was in an area of scrubland and it was Maro’s own mayor who called the fire brigade out.
The second fire happened in the Amijara area of Nerja yesterday evening at around 8.30pm, next to an electricity substation and the smoke could clearly be seen from Nerja. Members of Nerja’s Civil Protection, Local Police and the Guardia Civil also attended. In total the fire destroyed around 2000 square metres of bush and some homes had to be evacuated, although no one was injured in the incident.
Last August, after the unusually dry summer, a huge forest fire towards the western end of Malaga province caused thousands of people to be evacuated from their homes and hotels and burnt around 1,000 hectares of land in the area between Coin and Marbella, making headlines around the world.
