The Iberostar Hotel in Torrox Costa (formely the Riu Hotel) was evacuated in the early hours of this morning after a fire broke out in the maintenance area of the hotel. Nearly a thousand people who were staying in the hotel at the time, were forced to flee and find refuge in the hotel grounds and on the nearby promenade.
Only the rapid action of firemen from Velez Malaga and Nerja, aided by four local police and Guardia Civil officers, prevented the flames from spreading to other areas of the four star hotel. The fire alarm automatically alerted the emergency services at 1.15am and the guests were able to return to their rooms by 3am.
The hotel is located in the largest complex in the Costa del Sol, with a total of 319 double rooms and more than a hundred apartments and suites, in an area of more than 11,000 square meters on the beachfront. This resort hotel was originally developed by the Riu chain more than 10 years ago and was sold to Iberostar earlier this year.
