Burriana Beach in Nerja had a very unusual visitor this evening, when a flamingo flew in and spent around an hour on the beach.
Although there are many seagulls (and a tame parrot) at Burriana, flamingos are not normally seen. Flamingos can be found in large numbers at Fuente de Piedra Lagoon (near Antequera) which is the largest breeding ground for flamingos in Spain. Flamingos from along the Mediterranean and north African coast head to the lagoon every year to breed. The lagoon is fed by underwater springs that pass through mineral salt deposits and covers an area of 13 square metres. 2009 was a good year for the Flamingos when just over 5000 young fledged at the lagoon, of which 600 were ringed.
