On Wednesday morning a Guardia Civil patrol boat stopped and boarded a sports fishing boat in waters 13 miles south of Caleta de Vélez. There were several bales of cannabis in plain view in the cabin of the vessel and the two occupants of the fishing boat were immediately arrested.
The boat was then taken to Caleta de Vélez port and a total of 38 bales of cannabis were found, weighing 1.2 tonnes, along with a satellite mobile phone and navigation equipment.
The two individuals who were detained are of Spanish nationality and are 29 and 31 years old.
Caleta de Vélez is 12 miles west of Nerja and has a small marina and commercial fishing port.
