Maro’s annual San Antón festival will be held this year on Thursday and Friday the 16th and 17th of January (2014). The fiesta is one of the oldest held in the town, having its origins in the 17th Century, where owners of livestock would honour San Antón by lighting bonfires at midnight to ask for protection for their animals for the coming year.
The festival starts on the 16th, with bonfires in the streets, and visitors and locals enjoy food and drink from the area. There will be mass and a floral offering at 6pm in the church and the fires are set at 7pm in different streets with music by Grupo de Fandangos Cortijeros and Coro Arena y Sal. At 9pm the main bonfire is lit in the main square, in front of the church. There is live music and dancing until the small hours and prizes for the best bonfire.
The 17th is the day of San Antón with a mass at midday and fireworks and a procession in the evening at 9pm, with entertainment during the day (2pm and 5pm in the Caseta Official). There will be music and dancing from 10.30pm.
