A team from the Spanish National Police force will be in Nerja on the 6th of May to issue electronic identity cards (DNIe) to Spanish nationals who want to upgrade from their old identity cards. The DNIe cards have an embedded chip, which allow them to be read electronically using a card reader and contain information about the holder such as name, address, date of birth etc. The cost will be €10.40 and anyone wanting to obtain a card need to make an appointment by phoning 951 70 80 90.
Foreign nationals living in Nerja are not eligible to get a DNIe card, and should apply for a NIE number instead. If you want to buy a property or a car in Nerja or open a bank account, you will need an NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjeros – Foreigners Identification Number). These are available from the police station in Torre del Mar and the Foreigners Department at Nerja Town Hall can give you the necessary forms.
