The results of yesterdays local elections have been announced and the incumbent Partido Popular have won with a big majority taking just over half of the nearly 9,000 votes and gaining 12 of the 21 council seats – giving the PP an absolute majority.
The win for the PP was reproduced throughout Spain, on a wave of anti-government feeling, due to the high unemployment and general morosity in the economy. This was the worst election result in 28 years for the ruling PSOE, who got 2 million votes less than the PP nationally, and does not bode well for Prime Minister Zapatero’s party as the general election is due in March 2012.
