2020 is proving to be the strangest year on record for tourism in Nerja, with fewer visitors than normal, yet all the bars, restaurants, beaches and shops are open more or less as usual. The only thing that has been closed are late bars and nightclubs, with nothing open after 1am and restrictions on occupancy levels on the beaches and terraces to ensure social distancing.
This means that this year there are more properties available to rent over the autumn and winter months than ever before. September and October in particular are great times to visit, the burning heat of August has gone, yet the beach days and evenings eating and drinking on the terraces continue. Many people choose to spend the winter in Nerja, to escape from Northern Europe’s bad weather and short days. Nerja’s mild climate and longer winter days compared to the UK attract many visitors who want to spend a month or more away from home. The town itself, although much quieter than in the packed holiday months of summer, remains lively, with most bars and restaurants open as usual.
Beach restaurants such as Ayos are open year round and are always full on sunny weekends. Sun lovers can always find a sheltered spot to sunbathe in at Burriana beach or Torrecilla when the sun is shining. Winter does bring cloudy days and occasional heavy rain, but the town’s many tapas bars offer somewhere to go when it is wet.
The winter months also offer perfect weather conditions to go walking in the mountains behind Nerja, or you can rent an electric mountain bike to explore on two wheels. The Nerja caves are also open year round and there are many nearby destinations to visit on a day trip, such as Granada (with the Alhambra), skiiing or hiking in the Sierra Nevada or Malaga city itself.
Due to Nerja’s southerly location, day’s are longer here compared to further north during the winter months with the earliest sunset being at 6pm towards the end of December. Nerja’s festivities also don’t stop just because the tourist masses have gone home – there are Christmas processions, a big New Year’s Eve party on the Balcon de Europa and the Carnival in February.
Plenty of accommodation is available in Nerja over this low season winter period (November through to March) and you can rent a house or apartment for roughly the same price per month as you would pay for a week in August.
