Nerja council has announced with some satisfaction, that their proposed plan for Nerja’s beaches has been approved in full by the Environment Department. The council claim that their plan was one of the first submitted to the Department for this year, to allow time for any modifications, which in the end were not needed.
This season, for the first time, there will be sunloungers available for hire at El Cañuelo beach. Another change on previous years, is the provision of canoes at Maro beach along with a designated boat channel.
A total of 76 sun loungers and parasols will be available for rent on El Cañuelo beach. El Cañuelo is one of the remote beaches between Nerja and Almunecar in the Maro-Cerro Gordo natural park.
Currently, other than a beach restaurant, there are no facilities on the beach. In the summer months there is a bus service down to the beach from the main road above, otherwise it is a long hot walk down the track. Hence the beach is one of the last unspoilt beaches on the Costa del Sol (picture below).
Canoes were last available to hire at Maro beach back in 2007. At present there is a canoe club that operates from the end of Burriana beach, allowing canoeists to explore the rocky coastline between Nerja and Maro, including a spectacular waterfall that falls from the cliffs onto a tiny beach below. This spot is only accessible by boat, pictured below.
