Nerja council has passed a motion calling on the Junta de Andalucia to improve the the footpaths and signposting in the natural park. Nieves Atencia Nerja’s councillor for the environment also wants new footpaths to be built in the park.

The motion, that was supported by all the political groups on the council, emphasised the importance of having clearly marked trails because “more and more people are planning their holidays based around outdoor activities” such as hiking.

For this reason Nieves Atencia believes it is worthwhile to add more value to the natural park, because “there are groups of walkers in Nerja who after 10 years still don’t know all the natural areas and the possibilities they offer”.

One of the most popular walks in Nerja is the Rio Chillar to which, ironically, Nerja council have made access more difficult by installing a barrier and banning parking in the access road, forcing visitors to park in a car park a long hot walk away from the river.
