Nerja is the venue for the first Festival Mares de Posidonia, whose aim is to make people aware of the damage that has occurred to the marine environment in Andalucia, and of the importance of seagrass meadows in helping to sustain and encourage sealife off the Mediterranean coast.

The event is supported by various organisations, including the Andalucian government, commercial fishing groups, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), CIRCES and the Nerja city council.

During the two days of the festival there will be a photographic exhibition at the Nerja Cultural Centre on Calle Granada.

On Saturday 18th there will be a parade through the town from the Balcon de Europa to the Plaza de los Cangregos, with street theatre and music, and the day is rounded off with a concert by Javier Ojeda at 10pm in the Plaza de los Cangregos.
