After 20 years at the top of Nerja’s political greasy pole, the incumbent Mayor, Jose Alberto Armijo, has finally come sliding back down after failing to get enough support at last night’s council meeting to elect a new mayor. In his place the 45 year old socialist PSOE candidate Rosa Arrabal has been appointed as Mayoress who will run a minority administration in the town.

At last month’s local elections the ruling Partido Popular won more seats than anyone else, but failed to win an overall majority, gaining 10 out of the 21 seats on offer. The PSOE won 6 seats, with the balance of power held by smaller parties, who finally delivered the change they were promising at the election.
