The Belgian Olympic athlete Tia Hellebaut, has chosen Nerja as her winter training ground, using the facilities at the Enrique López Cuenca stadium. The high jumper was European champion at Gothenburg in 2006 and Olympic champion in Beijing 2008 (as seen in the video).
Back in April she trained at the Enrique López Cuenca stadium as part of her preparations for London 2012, where she came outside the medals in fifth place. She also trained in Nerja as part of her preparations for Gothenburg, 2006.
At the 2006 European Championships and 2007 Indoor European Championships Hellebaut won the gold medal in the high jump. The 2006 victory became especially notable, when just a couple of minutes later her close friend and compatriot Kim Gevaert completed a historical sprint double. The images of both athletes celebrating their victory together, wrapped in a national flag, became part of Belgian sports history. She holds the Belgian records for heptathlon, indoor pentathlon, and high jump, both indoors and outdoors.
The Councillor for Sports, José Alberto Tomé, said that “it is an honor that athletes choose to train in Nerja, demonstrating the high quality of our sports facilities.”
