The mayor of Nerja has revealed the new plans to install a lift at the health centre at a cost of €56,000. The new lift will give step-free access to the first floor and is an important upgrade to the building for those people with walking difficulties. Once the plans have been approved (which the mayor claims will happen “as quickly as possible”), the work will take two months to complete.
The ageing health centre is due to be replaced with a completely new building on the other side of town, but due to wrangling between the local council and the regional government progress on the project has been stalled for years. The location favoured by the council is currently being used as a free car park (pictured) after the groundworks were completed several years ago at a cost of several hundred thousand euros. However this area is zoned for an educational facility by the Junta de Andalucia and until both parties can agree on a location, work can not start on the new health centre.
