Nerja Council have announced plans to install more recycling bins around the town, along with an environmental awareness campaign to encourage residents to recycle more waste, rather than simply throwing it away. In total there will be 150 new recycling bins installed around the town.

In the first eight months of this year, the refuse service collected 113 tonnes of packaging in Nerja, 268 tonnes of glass and 157 tonnes of cardboard and paper. These figures represent a significant increase over previous years and the council are expecting to have collected around 12% more recycling waste this year compared to 2011 and 52% more than in 2010.

There are also plans for a mobile construction and demolition waste recycling unit to complement the one in Velez-Malaga. This unit will recycle building waste for use in council construction works. The new facilities are being provided by Malaga County Council’s environment department.
